Darice started riding at a very young age when her dad would throw her up in the saddle and say, "You get on 'um first." She's been training horses and mules ever since, working for Lifesaver's Wild Horse Rescue, Rock N Easy mule ranch, private clients, and her own stock. Darice helped train 3 BLM mustangs that went to the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah and she was part of a Brumby Gentling Team that went to Australia to share how our mustangs are gentled here in the U.S. She adopted her first Carters early in 2004 and they quickly became her favorite wild horse herd. Becoming a teamster has been a highlight of her career and finding her soul mate with a mutual love of the Carters and mules has been a dream come true.

Debra Holbrook

Secretary / Research

Debra can't remember when her love for horses began but her first encounter at age three was the "photo" pony that went around, house to house in a South Gate, California neighborhood.  In the resulting picture, she was not secure about the idea and looked like she wanted to bail off, if it weren’t so far from the ground.  But something happened, and they became an obsession as happens for many young girls that dream of their wonder horse!  At twelve she had her very own, Kandy. He was worth beans and strawberry picking and then some to the total of $150!

Life was hard in many ways growing up and Debra's adventures were her saving grace.  When Kandy died in a tragic accident she spent 14 hours burying him knowing he would be the last horse in her life. Economics was not on her side to have a life-long involvement with horses.  Debra's love for them never went away, especially the beautiful horses in the wild. Her first wild encounter was on one of her favorite types of vacations, a wagon train trip through the Black Rock Desert.

Debra loves the West and has spent 30-plus years in a ghost town, writing about Shaniko, Oregon, and researching the area's history.  She's enjoyed her isolation and insulation from a lot of the world and loves to remember how time was and embrace the setting of the High Central Oregon desert.  The Carter Reservoir Mustangs have a special spot in my heart, as do the plight of wild horses everywhere.

Lael Neal

Advisor

Lael grew up in rural Southern California, where she loved wild open spaces.  Her family clocked thousands of miles on horseback throughout the San Jacinto Mountain range where she decided she wanted to get “paid to play outside.”

College included acquiring a bachelor's degree in Environmental Science from the University of Iowa, with a minor in Biology and Geology.

For nearly 20 years Lael has worked for a local County Conservation Department managing various ecosystems including prairies, wetlands, savannas, and woodlands.  Management includes prescribed fire, invasive species removal, native habitat restoration, forest stand improvements, plant inventories, and native seed harvest.

In Lael's free time, she's outside biking, hiking, canoeing, gardening, backpacking, birding, or botanizing.

Lael hopes to bring her deep understanding of natural systems and ecology to the board of directors.
